It was a while when I published some new pictures. Here it comes one from Doel. Belgium village which I visited about ten days ago.
---
I have also put some new updates for web. For now only cosmetics and small fix. Now menu is accessible even from photo pages, which also shows index and number of pictures in just viewed gallery.
Small fix I added was about stupid bug in MS IE where at certain conditions text was disappearing and become invisible. Maybe yo notice it on some pages in journal and sometimes on top page. Should be OK now.

This is a doorway of one of the empty houses in village called Doel in Belgium. In this village as far as I know people were more or less force to leave their homes because of plan for extending harbour. I visited it for few hours. They are still people living but a quite some houses are empty and not many public sevices are running.

Today is a sad day. I have sold my Voigtlander Bessa-R2 together with Ultron 35/1.7 and other things. Well it is great camera and I hope it will serve its new owner as good as it served me. I wish you all the best J.v.P.

It was a while I wrote anything here. I must say that main reason is daily work. I am so tired every day when I came home that I have no mode to do anything else. It is really pity as I would love to spent more time on my photographs. I have few things to do:
  • Finish putting project page on web
  • Add articles about how I develop and print
  • Develop last few rolls
  • prepare set of 10-15 prints for sending out
  • finally install CFS

Yesterday I developed two rolls from my tryouts of lower sensitivity films. Ilford FP4+ and Kodak 125PX. I am just scanning all that.
Today in few hours I am going to take a look to one Olympus OM-4. I will see what such a think looks like, I was playing with thought to buy one.
---
Back from Delft. Camera was interesting, little bit too much buttons for my taste, but I could get use to it. Little bit used as well, on the other hand that you can expect from almost 20 years old camera. MY OM-2n looks like new at it is also 20 years or more old. The lens 50/1.8 was totally useless, dirty inside, very hard diaphragm ring.
I was sitting there playing with camera and thinking. At the end I said no. I was going primary for that spot meter, but I am not sure if it was any extra use for me in a way was done there. The spot feels quite big, dimmer viewfinder. And I believe major reason was that camera was really used and lens was ready for recycling.
---
I promised while ago that I will show how to develop b&w film to our neighbor. So she came yesterday and we did one roll of Neopan 400 from her camera and one mine. I was little in hurry and I agitate not once a minute as I do normally but three times. This lead to little too dense negative from my exposures while, and that is interesting, her negative made on matrix metering of canon 300 where less dense. So it means, my meter little overexposing or her little underexposing.

Finally I scan my Ilford FP4+ and Kodak 125PX. Ilford is not bad in Aculux 2 but has kind of dull low contrast feeling. On the other hand Kodak 125PX really surprised me. Very nice tone scale, no problem in first development, so time just fit perfectly. I am really impressed in Aculux 2 it has much wider scale of tones than FP4+. But of course you need to realize that I developed only one roll of 125PX and only two rolls FP4+. So these conclusions are very preliminary and based on mostly different light. While this last roll of FP4+ was shot in overcast day, the 125PX was done in sunny day in hard shadows. But it handle this high contrast very well keeping quite a lot details in shadows, where my first roll of FP4+ (also exposed in sunny day) was lacking and in the same time blowing highlights. Nothing like this happened to Kodak 125PX. I need to try more of these and I still have one roll of this kind to develop, maybe tomorrow?

From Sunday, when I decide to not buy OM-4, I have it in my head thought about new camera. Tell me why is that? I will try out canon eos 30 (elan 7) today. My good friend borrowed me 50mm lens and other good friend body. My thoughts are also going around Nikon F80 (N80) which, at least based on paper information fits my way of working better.
And I can't get out of my mind thoughts about buying Leica. So tell me what to do, maybe I should just forget about it and focus more about making photographs than buying equipment.

I have developed next roll of Kodak 125PX, I can't say right now exactly but just looking at negative it feels good. I believe this will be my low sensitivity film of choice with Paterson Aculux 2 developer. If time permits I will scan it tomorrow and than I will know for sure.

I have a little discussions with Viera about my photography and new cameras and my targets. This is great to have somebody who can tell you outside view, who knows you and would like to help you!

I have got few e-mails as reaction about my thought over the photo equipment. Those discussions are now turning more around a point why this situation actually occurred. It is really interesting and I am glad I have few people here who can help me to look and the things from other side.
My wifes reaction when I told her about Leica (she knew already that I struggle little bit with my childhood theme) was: "Isn't there something else wrong? New camera woudn't solved that problem would it?"
Than today i have got e-mail from Dirk where he wrote: "Usually when one is thinking one needs more equipment, the opposite is true. Something else is blocking you, you have to find out what it is and solve it. After you have done that, maybe you decide you need another camera, but at least you know why and what you going to do with it."

Those discussions let me thinking more about this and as I wrote back to Dirk:
I have similar feeling as you describe. Something is blocking me. Last autumn I met one very good person, photographer and after discussion with her and watching my pictures she advice me to pickup a theme and work on it little longer (she had in mind something like year). I already in that time had idea that I like to document feelings from my childhood. Around age of 35 I start having really a lot of memories from my childhood and was wondering how to fix them so I will not forget them when I get older. And than I choose for that as my project, and I like to made it the way that more people who look at images will remind their own time when there were young.
Working on it for more than eight month now I am more and more realizing that it is very difficult to do it the way I imagine especially when I have rather limited time for photographing and even living in country I never was as a child.
So I shoot a lot of children and places where they play, shadows on wall when you go sleep, shapes which reminds table where you use to take breakfast before going to school and similar things.

And I am getting feeling that it is maybe too much to do this as a first project and I start thinking about do something little more easier and shorter first. I start thinking about do some project about chess players in club where I used to play. I discussed that a bit with Dave where I was writing that maybe that is why I need Leica :-) to not disturb people while they playing. He wrote me back:
"Correct - I guess I was saying that a silent camera with fast lens is necessary condition - but not enough on its own to get you through the process.
But even with an absolutely quiet camera, the real challenge is to develop a relationship with some of the players, and then expand from there.
Another thing is that if you do know everyone there - you might get their permission to shoot with a slightly noisier camera with a longer lens from further away."

And than Dirk wrote today morning:
"Could it be that you have over-estimated yourself a little? Lifting 100kg at the beginning, when you should start with 10kg? Any project that takes that long will challenge you to the maximum. And this one is your first. Plus, you are in a different country etc. which I think is great, because it adds something universal about childhood, because it is the same in essence everywhere... just like people are the same everywhere, with little variation (you played pogi, they play something else). My point is maybe you should put this project in the backburner and start with something you can complete in 1-2 months. Then you will have an achievement and some experience how to take on the big one. "

This feels like good way and perfectly fits to what I had somehow in back of my mind and coudn't realize fully.

Thank you all for this, now things are more clear!

I went to photo shop today to take a look at Nikon F80 and compare it with Canon eos 30 I'd borrowed. F80 is lighter, but feels little bit more plastic than eos 30. On the other hand I like spot meter and generally feeling of camera.
I must say that my fever of new camera is slowly falling down. I still like to take a look at Leica M6 and OM-2s and than I will make decision if and if yes than which one :-)

Projects. I believe, that working on one subject is good approach for improving in photography. To have own projects. I opened today new page called Projects which contains one finished and one project of mine in progress. I am planning to work, soon, on next small project which I hope will help me to find correct direction in photography for me.

Please let me know what do you think about my projects and excuse me for my writings. I hope it is not as bad that you can't understand. But in any case I would appreciate if you find some grammar errors or typos if you let me know. English is not my first language, but I try to do my best. Thank you in advance for your comments and opinions.

I had develop for the first time Kodak 400TX, know as Tri-X. I was wondering about this film, everywhere you can read about it as it is the same kind of think for street photography like Leica.
I used Paterson Aculux 2 as usually for 9 minutes. The result look very well. I must say it is very similar to my favorite Fuji Neopan 400 same look. Only one thing bothers me. Even I wash the film quite long and use cleaning solution I always use for washing film after fixer, it still kept his purple color. I used fresh made batch of fixer. Withe Neopan I have base after cleaning nicely transparent.
I am planning soon start with printing again and than I will see more, especially grain comparison to Fuji Neopan. But so far it looks good but not better than my results from Neopan 400 and therefore I am not going to switch.

I developed film for friend. Fuji Neopan 1600 exposed at 1000ASA. It turns quite OK as far as I can see without detail scan. I need to do more testing with this film and Paterson Aculux 2 myself.
---
In few last days I had feeling that my scanner Acer(BenQ) ScanWit 2720s producing more dust on scans than it used to. So I opened it, first time after almost five years. Well there was some dust on the path where negative holder is moving and little around power supply. I clean it all with pressed air. I will see today if that helps. Anyway I think is quite amazing how little dust get inside in five years of working.
---
Dirk is going to send me some Konica Minolta Pan 100 film. Just for fun I will try to developed them with my favorit Aculux 2. It is more for fun that for real test ot use as I can't buy them here in Europe. I am looking forward to it.

After couple of weeks, doing other things I have decided today to install CFS (Continuous Flow System) from MIS to my Epson Photo 890. I prepared everything and reserve time. And I have finsihed before I evens tarted. There is a kind of plastic holder for tubes keeping them over the moving cart with head. They probably send me one for 1280 printer as it is little too long and do not leave enough space on left side for remove of the cartridges.

I have wrote to their forum and to the B&W Digital forum and issued support ticket to MIS but no clear answer so far. I believe it is not really big deal to cut it as I can see it from pictures, but I just want to be really sure.

All is done. I helped myself. I am now running CFS from MIS with their last carbon pigment inks name UT2 on my Epson photo 890. They describe in installation guide it will take about 30minutes. Well I am quite precise and I was doing it first time, took me about two hours. But slow work paid off. I had no problem and after little head cleaning I am just printing my first print.

Little problem with too long bridge bracket for holding tubes over the printer head I solved by cutting piece of plastic. It was easy and fast. On the rest of installation there where small hiccups. Like manual was bind together wrongly so suddenly there was a page six instead of four and than four was after. Also Velcro mounts were only for four bottles but I order for six ink printer. All small problems but together with not responding customer service of MIS I got little bad feeling. Only little because I am buying from them all my printing stuff for more than two years and never had a problem. Or if I had it was solved in few hours. This time, I do not know, was that holiday problem or Friday production?
Anyway I am glad it is working and I hope it will stay working for quite some time.

I am printing and try new possibilities with my new CFS system with UT2 carbon pigment inks. I like it a lot. Medium warm one is nice better than previous warm tone with UT1 and also Cold curve on EEM paper is better, not so blue but it had that nice cold feeling. Carbon and Sepia tones are little special, fitting probably only certain type of images.

I have started today big cleanup of my archives. I am going through last four years, Through almost 10000 images in my archive. Correcting names and categorization in IMatch. It was interesting to see some old stuff. I just started still a lot of to finished, but only year 2001 was little messy. I believe in two days I can be finished. I need to burn some raw images on CDs to make some space on hard disk.

I have bought Olympus OM-2s program. Very similar camera to my OM-2n. Only major difference it has a spot meter, or better call it partial meter. It is also much younger than my and surprisingly it looks like completely new. So now I have quite a nice OM system, those two bodies and 28/2.8 and 50/1.4 and 85/2.0 lenses.
I did today one test roll with it and I am about to developed it now. I use spot meter to measure some scene and I am kind of curious to see how it turns out.
---
The roll is hanging to dry. It looks very good. I decrease a bit time as I was expecting different way of exposing it using spot meter will bring more dense highlights. What I do is measure the darkest spot on scene by spot meter and than closing the lest by two stops. To you who know about zone system, I was by that placing measurement of the darkest place from zone five to zone three. As usual I will scan film tomorrow and than will see more. But camera is working good, only thing is maybe that winding lever has a little too mechanic feeling, like it isn't lubricated enough.

I am still busy with organizing and correcting things from previous years. It is quite a work I must say I though I will be done on weekend, but I hope I will in few next days. Using IMatch i made template to print my contact sheets. there are some predefined but as usually I like something little different. So I made one.
CFS is working perfectly no problems so far. I print in total about fifteen prints plus two contact sheets.

Today morning I took camera with me and put next film to it. Still playing with spot meter and zone system to make my metering. I also use palm of my hand. Today is a bright sun morning and than make for great contrast so I selected scenes where deep shadows and bright light where. This will be challenge for my development. From the first roll through this camera I see that I need to adjust little my development times. Of course I need to make little bit more shots. As I am exposing I am thinking a lot about the light and zone system and range of brightness. It is kind of refreshing for the moment. I believe after while when I will be more comfortable with camera it will be just a routine.
Also little surprising for me is that because I am not thinking much about handling camera but about light in my composition it gives kind of extra dimension to my photographing. Like I am aware about more things. Let's see how it will turn out in pictures, but I like it. Especially today, in this beautiful bright Sun morning which we have got after yesterday's whole day of shade and raining. I love sunny morning with a drops of water on grass leaves.

I have scanned part of the first roll I exposed Sunday with OM-2sp. Only part because I am again having little problem with scanner on winXP so it takes longer time to scan and I went in bed early yesterday.
But back to spot metering. There is one shot (maybe I put it on last roll, together with some other shots with spot meter soon), where forest is on left side than small beach going down to lake. Sun was directly burning on beach but shades in forest where almost dark. So I measure dark forest and close lens by to stops to move it to zone III. And than I exposed.
Result: There is a plenty details in forest and it is not dark at all, looks like street exposed in overcast day. On the other hand beach is quite burned there are details but very little and of course on sky nothing even I remember there where some clouds. So Does that mean that I have to go three stops down? Or rate my film one stop more sensitive for development process I did. Probably yes. I will do more test shots like this when weather allows.

Well I didn't write too much recently in this journal. I am very busy with going through my pictures. Fixing mistakes in IMatch database and burning raw and print files on CDs. Finaly I am taking more advatage of using this excelent software.
I am also printing more prints as I need some for next Saturday. Weather here is very fluctuating in few minutes sky is clear and in next few cloudy. Very difficult for my spot meter tests I have planned already few days ago. I still has not time to conduct them.

Today morning again great weather. So I took OM-2sp for a test ride withs pot meter :-) Well I guess it was more test drive for me than for camera. I did few shots with different way of metering. I am curious.
I also try using palm of my hand as place to meter and base on fact that it should be in zone VI, I set meter. One thing is not fully clear for me when I am taking picture against sun my hand is in shadow. Does the the same way of measurement applies than?
